MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT USING DNA FOR FORENSIC PURPOSES
There is no such thing as a DNA match. There is only the exclusion or non-exclusion of a possible contributor of DNA.
Current DNA testing systems were not created for forensic purposes, but for medicine and research. This means the current scientific systems are very effective at eliminating suspects, therefore freeing the innocent. However, the system is much less effective in identifying the suspect. This is because the types of DNA samples encountered in a forensic case are frequently degraded, mixed or of limited quantities and therefore could lead to a false identification of a suspect.
Another fallacy is that DNA cannot be identified as blood, saliva, sweat, tears or mucus.
Also, DNA testing cannot specify when the DNA was deposited or placed.
In case of a mixture DNA testing cannot explain the order, in other words where there is blood and semen, it is not possible to specify which came first and when it was deposited.
Since small amounts of DNA are easily transferred, it becomes an easy tool to frame people.
